Ukil Munshi (1885–1978) was a celebrated Baul bard and mystic songwriter of Bhati Bengal, rooted in the haor landscape of Netrokona. An imam as well as a composer of spiritual folk songs, he transformed earthly separation, Sufi devotion, Radha-Krishna longing and the imagery of rivers and wetlands into some of Bengal’s most haunting songs of love and transcendence.
Early Life in the Bhati Region
Ukil Munshi was born on 11 June 1885 in Nurpur Boali village in the Khaliajuri area of present-day Netrokona, a landscape belonging to the great wetland world of Bhati Bengal. His family name was Abdul Haque Akand. His father is recorded as Golam Rasul Akand. The rivers, seasonal floods, open haors and boat-borne life of this region would later become inseparable from the emotional language of his songs.
The name by which he became famous has its own history. Accounts describe “Ukil” as a name used for him from childhood, while “Munshi” became associated with his religious learning and work as an imam and teacher. Unlike the popular stereotype of the wandering Baul standing outside formal religious life, Ukil Munshi occupied an unusual position: he participated deeply in Muslim religious practice while also becoming one of the most memorable mystic songwriters of the region.
Several biographical accounts connect his childhood with the local ghetu-song tradition, an important form of performance once widespread in eastern Bengal. The precise nature of that association is uncertain. Some sources state that he performed ghetu songs, whereas descendants cited by later researchers have maintained that he listened to the form but did not himself perform it. What is clearer is that he grew up within a rich musical environment in which Vaishnava imagery, village performance, Islamic devotional expression and the songs of the waterways existed side by side.
The Imam and the Mystic Bard
Ukil Munshi served as an imam in rural mosques, taught Arabic and religious knowledge, and was remembered as a man closely connected with the everyday religious life of his community. Yet he also composed and performed songs filled with mystical yearning. This apparent contrast became one of the defining features of his life.
His spiritual path was strongly influenced by Pir Syed Mozaffar Ahmad of Richi Darbar Sharif in Habiganj. Later accounts describe Ukil Munshi as a devoted disciple of the pir, and a recent documentary on his life records a tradition that he was among those granted spiritual authority, or khilafat, by Mozaffar Ahmad. His songs frequently speak in the language of surrender to the guide, repentance, longing for divine mercy and the painful distance between lover and beloved.
For Ukil Munshi, however, spiritual expression did not remain confined within a single set of religious symbols. His songs could move between Islamic Sufi vocabulary and the emotional world of Radha and Krishna. The beloved might be an earthly lover, the spiritual guide, Krishna, or ultimately the Divine. This openness gave his compositions several layers of meaning at once and reflects the interconnected folk culture of the greater Mymensingh, Netrokona and Sylhet wetland regions.
The Poetry of Separation
Separation, or biroho, stands at the centre of Ukil Munshi’s artistic identity. His songs repeatedly evoke waiting, abandonment, memory and the helpless desire to cross a distance that cannot easily be overcome. Yet this separation is rarely merely romantic. Human longing becomes a metaphor for spiritual incompleteness: the absent beloved can gradually become the unreachable Creator or murshid.
The physical landscape of Bhati Bengal gives these emotions their distinctive form. Monsoon water, riverbanks, boats, sails, changing winds and distant shores recur naturally in the world of his songs. In Ashadh Maishya Bhasa Pani, the flooded monsoon landscape and the expectation of someone arriving by boat become an image of profound waiting. The song belongs unmistakably to the experience of haor life, yet the emotional situation is universal.
Another enduring composition, Amar Gaye Joto Dukkho Soy, presents suffering through the language of intimate betrayal and wounded love. Oporadhi Hoileo Ami Tor transforms the voice of the offender into one of submission and appeal, closely echoing the relationship between disciple and spiritual guide. O Dokhin Hawa Re similarly turns the invisible southern wind into a carrier of longing, connecting physical distance with devotion to his pir.
Sufi Thought and Radha-Krishna Imagery
One of the most remarkable characteristics of Ukil Munshi’s work is his ability to enter the emotional voice of Radha while remaining firmly connected to Islamic spirituality. The suffering of Radha in separation from Krishna provided him with a powerful language for the soul separated from the Divine. In this respect his songs belong to a much older cultural conversation in eastern Bengal, where Vaishnava and Sufi modes of longing often developed in close geographical proximity.
His compositions therefore resist narrow classification. A song may begin in the recognisable world of Radha-Krishna love and later turn toward repentance, divine judgment or the mercy of Allah. The transition is not presented as a contradiction. Instead, the different images become vehicles for expressing a shared spiritual condition: the human being stripped of pride and searching for union with the ultimate beloved.
This blending also explains why Ukil Munshi could appeal across religious communities. His spiritual imagination drew from the lived culture of the region rather than treating Hindu and Muslim symbolic worlds as sealed territories. His songs demonstrate how village mysticism in Bengal could absorb different devotional vocabularies while preserving an intensely personal relationship with God.
Songs and Musical Legacy
Among the compositions reliably associated with Ukil Munshi are Ashadh Maishya Bhasa Pani, Amar Gaye Joto Dukkho Soy, Oporadhi Hoileo Ami Tor, Eso He Kangaler Bondhu, Bhikhari Duare, Kulman Joubon Dilam Bisorjon and O Dokhin Hawa Re. Oral transmission has preserved a much larger body of songs, although the exact size of his corpus is difficult to establish because many compositions circulated through singers rather than through authoritative written editions.
He sang both with and without instrumental accompaniment and also appeared in folk performance gatherings and pala-song settings. A documented account of a major Baul gathering in Netrokona in 1951 places Ukil Munshi alongside figures such as Rashid Uddin, demonstrating his place within the broader network of mystic singers active in the region during the twentieth century.
Later generations encountered his work through leading folk performers, especially Bari Siddiqui, whose interpretations helped bring the mystic repertoire of Netrokona to a national audience. Songs associated with Ukil Munshi also reached cinema audiences through the folk-music revival surrounding Humayun Ahmed’s 1999 film Srabon Megher Din. The enormously popular Shua Chan Pakhi has often been attributed to Ukil Munshi in popular and even institutional sources, but researchers have also attributed it to Rashid Uddin. Because of this unresolved authorship history, it should not be treated as a securely documented Ukil Munshi composition without qualification.
Later Life and Enduring Legacy
Ukil Munshi spent his later years in the Netrokona region and died on 12 December 1978. He is buried at Jainpur in Mohanganj, near the Betai River. His memory remains closely tied to the waterways that shaped both his life and his poetry.
His legacy survives not only through recordings and oral performance but through scholarship, commemorative programmes and renewed cultural research. The book Ukil Munshir Chinho Dhore by Wahed Sujon explored his life and philosophical world, while the 2026 documentary Ektarar Imam brought fresh public attention to his unusual identity as both imam and mystic bard.
Ukil Munshi occupies a distinctive place in Bengali folk culture because he refused, in practice and in poetry, the boundaries that later generations often imagine between sacred traditions. His riverine imagery is unmistakably rooted in Bhati Bengal, but the heart of his music is broader: the vulnerable human being waiting for the beloved, surrendering pride and seeking mercy. Through that language of separation, Ukil Munshi turned the local experience of the haor into a lasting expression of spiritual longing.
