Shah Alam Sarkar (born 1965) is a distinguished Bangladeshi Baul singer, pala performer, lyricist and composer rooted in the folk traditions of Bikrampur. Through thousands of compositions exploring divine love, human relationships, mortality and Sufi thought, he has helped carry the living traditions of Baul and Shariat–Marfat pala into popular music and cinema.
Early Life in the Folk Landscape of Bikrampur
Shah Alam Sarkar is one of the prominent living voices of Bangladesh's Baul and pala-song traditions—a singer, lyricist, composer and performer whose work connects the older oral culture of rural Bengal with the cassette era, popular folk music, national festivals and Bangladeshi cinema. Biographical sources generally give his date of birth as 1 February 1965 and place his birth in Kurigaon village of Louhajang in Munshiganj, part of the historic cultural region of Bikrampur.
Music was present around him from an early age, but his journey was not shaped by formal institutional education. Accounts of his childhood describe economic hardship that compelled him to leave regular schooling early and take responsibility for earning a living. He spent time in Dhaka's Sadarghat area, where he made a living through small-scale trading, including selling garment accessories. The contrast between rural musical memory and the difficult realities of urban working life later became part of the experiential world from which his songs drew their language and imagery.
Musical Initiation and the Influence of His Gurus
Sarkar has identified the mystic singer Abdus Sattar Mohonto, his uncle, as the person from whom he first learned music. His most important formal musical influence, however, was the celebrated pala performer Abul Sarkar. Shah Alam Sarkar later described Abul Sarkar not simply as a music teacher but as a formative influence on his life as a whole. He learned from him the disciplines of melody, performance, lyrical construction and, crucially, the intellectual demands of pala gaan.
His early career was far from effortless. A frequently recounted episode places him at an urs gathering in Shankharipatti, Old Dhaka, in 1988, where an inexperienced troupe failed to hold its audience. Roughly a decade later he returned to the same area as an accomplished disciple of Abul Sarkar and performed successfully. Whether read as biography or as a story of artistic apprenticeship, the episode captures an important feature of his career: mastery came through long participation in the living performance culture of Baul and pala music rather than through a conservatory or written curriculum.
Pala Gaan and the Shariat–Marfat Tradition
Although widely known as a songwriter, Shah Alam Sarkar has repeatedly emphasized that he considers himself a Baul first and a lyricist second, while describing palakar—a performer of musical debate—as one of his most important identities. Pala gaan requires more than singing ability. Performers must respond to questions, religious propositions, metaphors and philosophical challenges in real time, often using verses and songs to construct arguments before an audience.
Sarkar is especially associated with performances involving Shariat and Marfat—the outward and inward dimensions of Islamic spiritual understanding in Bengali Sufi discourse. At the 2017 Dhaka International Folk Festival, for example, he and Aleya Begum presented a Shariat–Marfat pala built around musical questions, answers and counterarguments. Such performances demonstrate how Bengali folk music can operate simultaneously as entertainment, spiritual inquiry and public philosophical dialogue.
Spiritual Thought and the Meaning of Folk Music
For Shah Alam Sarkar, folk music is not merely a musical genre. In interviews he has described folk as a form of philosophy that must be entered deeply before it can be written authentically. He distinguishes ordinary romantic expression from the spiritual orientation of much folk composition, where longing, separation and the language of the beloved may point beyond human relationships toward the Creator, the murshid or an unseen spiritual reality.
This approach places his work within a long Bengali tradition in which apparently simple rural vocabulary carries several levels of meaning. Love, separation, the body, death, the fragility of worldly life, devotion and the search for truth recur throughout the repertoire associated with him. Yet his language generally remains direct and accessible. That combination—philosophical subject matter expressed through memorable vernacular imagery—has been central to his popularity among audiences far beyond specialist Baul circles.
Songwriting, Recordings and Collaboration with Momtaz
Shah Alam Sarkar became particularly influential during the flourishing cassette and CD era of Bangladeshi folk music. Contemporary profiles from the late 2010s credited him with more than 2,500 compositions and hundreds of released albums, although published totals vary depending on the date and source. His songs encompass devotional and mystical compositions, separation songs, humorous and social pieces, Baul forms and material written for commercial recordings.
A major chapter in his career is his association with folk singer Momtaz Begum. Numerous songs written and composed by Sarkar became widely known through her recordings, and reports have linked him with more than seventy albums performed by Momtaz. Her highly successful 2001 album Ronger Manush consisted of songs written by Shah Alam Sarkar; an account published by Prothom Alo notes that Sarkar had previously recorded the material himself. This circulation of compositions between author and performer illustrates an important feature of Bengali folk culture, where a song may acquire new audiences through successive voices while the composer's identifying bhanita, or signature verse, remains significant.
Popular Songs and Work in Cinema
Among songs repeatedly associated with Shah Alam Sarkar are Faitta Jay Bukta Faitta Jay, Mayer Kandon Jabot Jibon, Bandhilam Piriter Ghor, Ami Jare Bashi Bhalo and Kalar Bashir Sure Mon Udashi. His repertoire ranges from intense separation and family emotion to mysticism, wit and philosophical reflection, demonstrating why he can move between intimate folk gatherings, competitive pala stages and large public festivals.
His writing also crossed decisively into Bangladeshi cinema. Sarkar has stated that he has written for more than one hundred films, partly because he wanted to challenge the assumption that a folk lyricist could not write successfully for cinema. Film credits include productions such as Molla Barir Bou, Sajghor, Poramon 2 and Golui. His lyric O Hey Shyam for Poramon 2, composed by Emon Saha and sung by Imran Mahmudul and Dilshad Nahar Kona, became a particularly visible example of a folk-rooted lyric reaching a contemporary film audience.
Recognition and Cultural Legacy
Shah Alam Sarkar's contribution has been recognized not only through popularity but also institutionally. He was selected for the Shilpakala Padak 2020 in the folklore category, an honour of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. The 2019 and 2020 awards were presented together in 2022 after delays associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.
His broader importance lies in the range of worlds he connects. He belongs to an oral tradition based on gurus, gatherings, debate and live improvisation, yet his songs circulated through commercial cassettes, CDs, television, film and digital platforms. He has worked within explicitly spiritual forms while also writing accessible songs for mass audiences. Most importantly, he continues to treat folk music as a field of thought rather than merely a nostalgic style. Through pala gaan, composition and performance, Shah Alam Sarkar remains an important link between Bengal's inherited mystical song traditions and the changing soundscape of contemporary Bangladesh.
