Abdur Razzak Dewan (1933–2003), widely known as Matal Razzak, was an influential Bangladeshi Baul poet, mystic singer and composer associated with the Dhaka–Keraniganj folk tradition. Through deceptively simple language, his songs explored dehatattva, divine love, mortality, social hypocrisy, religious practice and the search for spiritual truth.
Early Life in the Dhaka Folk-Cultural Landscape
Abdur Razzak Dewan, popularly remembered as Matal Razzak or Matal Kobi Razzak Dewan, occupies an important place in the twentieth-century folk and mystic musical culture of Bangladesh. His exact birth year is not completely settled in surviving secondary accounts. A detailed biographical account places his birth on 27 August 1933 at Char Waspur in the greater Dhaka region, while several later news reports give 27 August 1930. The date of 27 August, however, is consistently associated with his birth. He died on 16 February 2003.
Accounts of his early life connect him closely with the riverine and rural cultural environment around Keraniganj and the western bank of the Buriganga. He was born into the family of Moksed Ali Bepari and Sonabanu. His formal education appears to have been limited: biographical accounts describe an early education in a maktab, where he studied Arabic and the Qur'an, followed by primary schooling. Conventional classroom education did not become the principal path of his life. Instead, local performance traditions—including jari, sari, pala and gatherings of folk singers and spiritual practitioners—became an alternative school through which he encountered music, oral philosophy and the expressive language of rural Bengal.
Discipleship under Abdul Khalek Dewan
A decisive influence on Razzak Dewan was the Sufi and Baul practitioner Abdul Khalek Dewan of the Keraniganj area. Drawn to Khalek Dewan's music and spiritual knowledge, Razzak became his disciple and entered a guru-centred tradition in which musical training was inseparable from reflection on the human body, the self, creation, divine reality and ethical conduct. Contemporary recollections also identify him clearly as a disciple of Khalek Dewan.
This relationship helped shape both his musical identity and the philosophical vocabulary of his songs. Rather than treating Baul music simply as entertainment, Razzak Dewan used the sung poem as a vehicle for inquiry. Questions about the body, the soul, the guru, God, worldly attachment and the meaning of religious practice repeatedly appear in the body of work associated with him.
The Meaning of “Matal Razzak”
Razzak Dewan became popularly known as “Matal Razzak,” and eventually the epithet became almost inseparable from his public identity. In Bengali mystic culture, the language of intoxication may operate on several levels: it can describe literal intoxication, but it is also a familiar metaphor for overwhelming love, ecstatic devotion and absorption in spiritual experience. Contemporary recollections show that the name belonged firmly to his lived public persona; later writers have also interpreted it within Bengal's longer tradition of the spiritually “intoxicated” seeker.
Whatever interpretation is preferred, the epithet should not obscure the seriousness of his thought. Behind the earthy vocabulary and provocative imagery lies a singer-poet deeply concerned with spiritual knowledge, morality and the contradictions of social life.
Dehatattva, Spiritual Inquiry and Human Conduct
Razzak Dewan is especially remembered for dehatattva and spiritually oriented songs. His compositions approach the human body not merely as physical matter but as a site through which the mysteries of existence, consciousness and divine reality may be contemplated. His repertoire also engages with guru-tattva, questions of creation, death, impermanence, worldly illusion and the relationship between visible religious behaviour and inner transformation.
A striking feature of his work is his suspicion of religion reduced to external display. Rather than rejecting faith, many of his songs demand that religious claims produce ethical consequences. Compassion, justice, sincerity and responsibility toward other human beings become tests of spiritual authenticity. This places him within a broad current of Bengali mystic thought in which inherited doctrine is repeatedly measured against lived humanity.
His language was accessible because it emerged from the vocabulary of ordinary people. Complex arguments about belief, hypocrisy, desire or mortality could therefore be expressed through familiar images, humour, irony and everyday speech. This combination of philosophical seriousness and conversational directness is central to his continuing appeal.
Love, Separation and the Fragility of Life
Not all of Razzak Dewan's songs are overtly theological. Love, longing, separation, emotional injury and the uncertainty of human relationships occupy another substantial part of the tradition associated with him. In the world of Bengali folk song, however, earthly and spiritual longing frequently overlap. The absent beloved can be understood simultaneously as a human companion and as a symbol of the elusive divine or desired truth.
Among songs widely credited to or strongly associated with Razzak Dewan are Mod Kheyechi Matal Hoyechi, Bhul Bujhe Chole Jao, Sukh Pakhita Gechhe Mara and Dunia Mayar Khela. Other collected repertoires preserve songs dealing with sleep and spiritual ignorance, the transience of life, Krishna imagery, prophetic devotion and criticism of empty religious formalism. Together they demonstrate that his creative range extended well beyond a single devotional vocabulary.
A Teacher within the Living Folk Tradition
Razzak Dewan's importance also rests on transmission. Folk traditions survive through relationships between guru and disciple, and several later performers identify him as an important teacher. Celebrated folk singer Momtaz Begum has recalled learning from him after her earliest musical education under her father, Madhu Boyati. She remembered spending extended periods near her teacher during the performance season and described him as someone who could both perform and teach effectively.
Baul singer Abdul Hai Dewan likewise became his disciple and travelled with his teacher to musical gatherings. Razzak Dewan gave Abdul Hai the affectionate title “Half Matal,” a name that remained attached to the younger singer's career. Such relationships reveal that Razzak Dewan was not simply the author of individual songs; he participated in a living pedagogical network through which repertoire, performance style and spiritual interpretation passed between generations.
Preservation of His Songs
Like the works of many Bengali folk poets, Razzak Dewan's songs circulated extensively through oral performance, handwritten notebooks, disciples and commercial recordings rather than through a single authoritative literary edition during his lifetime. This makes questions of textual accuracy and attribution particularly important.
After his death, members of his family, researchers and cultural activists undertook efforts to preserve his manuscripts and repertoire. The Abdur Razzak Dewan Foundation published the collection Baul Anjali in 2020, while another edited collection, Matal Razzak: Gitimala, appeared in 2022. A public dispute later developed over the use and editorial history of the manuscripts. The controversy itself illustrates how valuable his surviving song notebooks have become and why careful source criticism remains necessary when documenting individual titles.
Death and Continuing Legacy
Abdur Razzak Dewan died on 16 February 2003. His songs nevertheless remain part of the performed repertoire of Bangladeshi Baul and folk musicians. Memorial gatherings, annual musical observances and performances by disciples and younger artists continue to return his compositions to public attention.
His lasting importance lies in his ability to bring demanding philosophical questions into the language of ordinary listeners. The body and the soul, love and separation, faith and hypocrisy, life and death, worldly attachment and divine longing coexist within his songs without losing the immediacy of folk expression. For this reason, Matal Razzak should be remembered not only as a colourful figure of rural musical culture but as a distinctive Bengali mystic poet whose songs turned popular performance into a form of philosophical conversation.
