Jalal Uddin Khan
Jalal Uddin Khan (1894–1972) was a renowned Baul poet, composer and mystic thinker of Netrakona in eastern Mymensingh. Drawing on Bengal’s folk spirituality and Sufi thought, his songs explored the human body, self-knowledge, love, the guru, social divisions and the search for the divine within humanity.
Early Life in Eastern Mymensingh
Jalal Uddin Khan was born on 25 April 1894 at Asad Hati in Kendua, in the Netrakona region of the historic greater Mymensingh district of Bengal. He grew up in an environment shaped by rural agriculture, riverine life, oral poetry, religious gatherings and the extraordinarily rich folk-musical traditions of eastern Bengal. His father, Sadar Uddin Khan, was known for his interest in literature, and this intellectual atmosphere appears to have encouraged Jalal's early attraction to poetry and music.
His formal education took him through institutions in Netrakona and Kendua, including Dutta High School. Accounts of his life state that he did not complete his secondary education. Yet the range of ideas later found in his songs demonstrates a lifelong habit of reading, discussion and independent inquiry. Rather than being confined to formal scholarship, his education continued through encounters with singers, fakirs, spiritual practitioners and ordinary rural people.
From Personal Experience to a Life of Spiritual Inquiry
Jalal Uddin Khan married Yakutunnesa Khanam and settled in Singhergaon in the Kendua area. Her early death during the 1920s is frequently described as a major turning point in his life. In the years that followed, his interest in music and spiritual philosophy became increasingly intense. He visited shrines and centres of spiritual practice and spent time with fakirs, Bauls, Sufi practitioners and other seekers across the greater Mymensingh and Sylhet regions.
Among the musicians who influenced his development was the celebrated Netrakona folk poet Rashid Uddin. Jalal's association with Rashid Uddin helped deepen his engagement with the musical culture of the region, although later writers differ over whether their relationship should strictly be described as that of guru and disciple. Jalal also came into contact with other strands of Bengal's folk spirituality. His intellectual and devotional world was particularly influenced by Sufi ideas associated with Pir Syed Abdul Quddus of Chattogram, whose Chishti-oriented tradition placed importance on spiritual remembrance and music.
Baul Thought, Sufism and the Search Within
Jalal Uddin Khan's songs occupy a distinctive meeting place between Baul thought, Bengali folk philosophy and Islamic mysticism. He was interested less in rigid theological boundaries than in the experience of discovering truth through the human self. Like many Bengali mystic poets before him, he repeatedly treated the human body as a field of spiritual knowledge: to understand the self was to move closer to understanding creation and its ultimate source.
This orientation made dehatattva, or the philosophy of the body, especially important in his work. Yet his philosophical range was much wider. He classified songs under subjects such as atmatattva, paramatattva, nigurhatattva, dehatattva, srishtitattva, sansartattva, sadhanatattva, gurutattva, prematattva, lokatattva, deshatattva and birahatattva. Murshidi, Marfati and Bhatiyali forms also formed part of his musical world.
Through these categories Jalal asked fundamental questions: What is the nature of the self? Where does the divine reside? What is the relationship between creator and creation? What is the true role of a murshid or spiritual guide? Why do human beings divide themselves by religion, caste and social identity when their fundamental existence is shared?
Humanism and Religious Thought
One of the strongest currents in Jalal's songs is humanism. His mysticism continually returns spiritual attention to the human being. He challenged religious practice when it became detached from compassion, truth and self-knowledge, and his songs questioned the social barriers separating Hindu and Muslim, high and low, believer and outsider.
His outlook should not simply be understood as a rejection of religion. Rather, he sought what he regarded as religion's inward truth. Sufi concepts, Bengali esoteric traditions and the practical wisdom of rural society were brought together in a worldview that valued truthfulness, justice, love, non-violence and recognition of the same life within different human beings. This synthesis gave his songs philosophical depth while preserving the direct vocabulary and imagery of village Bengal.
Poet, Composer and Performer
Jalal Uddin Khan was not only a writer of lyrics but also a singer and composer. Historical accounts describe his participation in major musical gatherings from the 1920s onward. One account recorded by folk-music researcher Mohammad Sirajuddin Kasimpuri describes Jalal performing in Dhaka as early as 1921, after which his melodies became known among a wide range of urban listeners.
His songs travelled far beyond his own performances. They entered the repertoires of professional and traditional singers, including celebrated figures of Bengali folk music such as Abbasuddin Ahmed and Abdul Alim. Among songs widely associated with Jalal are O Amar Dorodi, Age Janle Tor Bhanga Naye Ar Chortam Na, Doyal Murshider Bajare, Sei Pare Tor Bosotbari, Ei Pare Tor Basa and Ore Rongila Nayer Majhi. Their language often uses familiar images—boats, rivers, markets, journeys, the body and relationships—to express questions about mortality and spiritual existence.
Jalalgeetika and the Scale of His Work
Jalal organised a substantial part of his work into collections known as Jalalgeetika. Four volumes appeared during his lifetime, followed by a fifth volume after his death. In 2005, scholar Jatin Sarker edited Jalalgeetika Samagra, bringing together 702 preserved songs.
The exact total number of songs Jalal composed remains uncertain. Some accounts describe approximately 848 compositions, while other biographical traditions place the number closer to one thousand, noting that many songs composed or transmitted orally may never have been collected. For historical precision, 702 is therefore best understood as the number preserved in the collected Jalalgeetika, rather than a definitive count of everything he created.
Jalal also wrote prose. A work known as Bishwarahasya demonstrates that his philosophical interests extended beyond the song form. His writings reveal a thinker concerned with the universe, human existence, spirituality and the relationship between visible experience and unseen reality.
Later Life and Legacy
By the later part of his life, Jalal increasingly concentrated on writing, philosophical discussion and teaching rather than public performance. His home became a meeting place where singers, fakirs, religious practitioners and visitors from different backgrounds could discuss music, society and spiritual questions. He died at Singhergaon on 31 July 1972, aged seventy-eight.
Jalal Uddin Khan now occupies an important place in the folk-cultural history of Netrakona and greater Mymensingh. His songs preserve a regional musical language while connecting it to some of Bengal's oldest philosophical concerns: the mystery of the body, the relationship between the individual and the infinite, the necessity of a spiritual guide, and the dignity of the human being.
His importance received formal national recognition when the Government of Bangladesh awarded him the Ekushey Padak in 2024, posthumously, for his contribution to music. More than half a century after his death, the continued performance, collection and study of his songs demonstrate that Jalal's legacy belongs not merely to the history of Baul music but to the broader intellectual and poetic heritage of Bengal.
